When I purchased my Black & Decker hedge trimmer, it came with only one battery - no enough to complete my long hedges in a single session. I'd checked in Home Depot for a back-up battery and learned they were not available except with a particular tool. Then I found this Black & Decker battery online through Amazon - the exact same battery as that which came with the trimmer, and couldn't wait for it to arrive. This is a great battery; with it I can now trim the entire length of my hedge without having to wait for a recharge. The battery slides into and out of both the tool and the charging station with absolutely no effort - a very important factor for me since I have arthritis in my hands. I highly recommend it. The price was great as well.

B&D doesn't really tell you the whole story about their batteries...

In my experience, this battery has 1.5 Ah cells, and unless HPB18 to which it is compared to has 1 Ah cells (which I doubt) it cannot have 50% more capacity. 25% is more likely and it was marketed as such for a while.

Adding to other review, I think I figured out number near the battery lock. First, you have manufacturing year and week along with some letters. And then there is three digit number, which tells you cell manufacturer (first digit) and capacity (two last digits). This is what I encountered:

412 - 1.2 Ah cells marked BD (most likely specifically manufactured for B&D) - usually FS18B and HPB18 batteries, but also some 244760. These cells are actually short Sub C (or 4/5 SC) and B&D puts plastic pad inside the battery, so housing has the same exterior size.

115 - 1.5 Ah cells without manufacturer identification

415 - 1.5 Ah cells marked BD

515 - 1.5 Ah cells manufactured by HANYU

All these are marketed as FSXtreme, HPB18-OPE, FS18BX and 244760

421 - 2.1 Ah cells manufactured by BYD - high capacity "Silver Series" FS18SBX. BYD is actually well known Chinese battery manufacturer, nice chunk of whose shares was recently purchased by Warren Buffett.

As one reviewer indicated the interchangeability of the batteries makes the entire Black and Decker 18 volt line very addictive. I find myself looking for tools that work with the batteries.

As for the batteries themselves the big positive is the interchangeability. There are two significant negatives. The first negative is that the charger that comes with the batteries and the tools is a dumb charger that does not tell you if it is complete or not. This is annoying. The second issue is the batteries are slightly anemic. Not bad since they are interchangeable but still a little more power and longevity would be nice. Don't worry though. Black and Decker has a silver series of the batteries that purports to be 40% longer life.

Overall a great system and one I am please with.

I've had my battery powered weedwacker for about a year now. It came with 2 batteries and I have no clue where the supplied charger is, I don't use it - it's trash. I've got a big lawn, about 5/8th acre, but I can get it with the 2 batteries, I just have to quick charge the first for a 3rd run with a Schulze Isl6-330. You don't have to have a $200 battery charger. One of the newer $50 RC toy chargers from china will work fine as long as it charges 15 cells, like an X-Charger B6 if you have a 12 volt power supply or a Thunder AC6 charger if you don't. It just won't charge at much over 2 amps, may take 45 minutes or so. My Schulze and HiTec 340 pro will recharge the batteries in about 20-25 minutes, the charge lasts about 15 in the tool. I could charge them faster, but the heat would kill them. I'm looking for a 3rd battery so I can rebuild the first 2 in rotation with premium industrial/RC cells. I have a local battery shop that does this and it will cost no more than buying a new battery and they should last for 3 to 5 years and will have at least 50% more useable time. Sitting on the shelf, stock batteries seem to hold a charge well, I top them off before I use them. It's unfortunate that B&D didn't include a decent computer controlled charger with their tools, it's like they don't understand batteries. I don't consider their expensive FAST one-hour charger to be useable, a decent computer controlled hobby charger like the Schulze identifies the cell chemistries, and charges them for both optimum longevity and use, it doesn't take an hour. A chinese equivelent charger to the Schulze costs about $90-$110.

Although I love my black and decker yard tools, the batteries only seem to last about a year and a half. Pretty soon I will have spent more on the batteries than the tools themselves. I love the tools, so I'll keep doing it, but it's kind of like printers and print cartridges... more money on the cartridges than the printer... I keep a set of three batteries charging so I can always have one ready to go for weed-wacking, blowing, trimming, etc... but, even after 1 and 1/2 years, they would only last about 2 minutes before dying. So, you just have to buy more batteries to get you through another year and a half.

For weed wacking, I am able to do my hold yard once plus the next week, half of the yard on one charge. The other battery seems to almost allow me to do my entire yard. Both came in the box with the tool. I also have a thrid battery in the package still that was a Lowe's special, buy a tool, get an extra battery free.

I dont like the 9hr charge on the battery. Hence why I bought a dual charger that is supposed to charge them faster, we'll see.

I will say that Amazon yet again pulled this list price from Fantasy Land. I have been looking everywhere lately for the best deal on new/refurbed 18v B&D tools, and of course for good deals on batteries. Even B&D sells the 18v battery for 36 USD online. I bought an 18V B&D cordless drill kit about five years ago, and built a house with it. (Subfloor screwing, drywall, metal roofing, etc.). When the batteries finally bought the farm, I thought about just buying a new battery. Why buy one battery for $40 when you can buy a cordless drill kit at china*mart for $69, and get two batteries plus a new drill-driver??? That's what I did. However, let me tell you: the new drill-driver is a POS compared to the version from 5 years ago. My older model has torque settings that go up in 2-pt increments up to 22, and that feature works fairly poorly, but the new one only has 6 settings, and I think overall, the quality is much worse. I'll only buy B&D as a throw-away tool. When you spend 100-150k building a house, cheap junk that gets the job done is okay by me. :) I'd rather have quality tools, though. Wish I could buy a Bosch cordless drill. It would be the bomb.

My first appliance was a dustbuster with the standard 18v battery pack. The charger was a disappointment due to lack of indication and long charge times. However, the battery seemed to last a reasonable period, holding a charge for several weeks while I used the dustbuster occasionally.

I bought a quick charger with LED indicators and have been pleased with the charging performance. I later bought a cordless drill that was sold without a battery. I used the dustbuster battery initially, but found that it didn't support drilling more than 12 - 4 inch screws into pine 2 X 4's.

I then bought an expensive Silver version of the battery, which is supposed to have better capacity. I have been very disappointed with the performance. The duty cycle actually seems to be less than the standard battery and it won't hold a charge for more than a day or two.
I charge the battery completely and leave it on the shelf, not even installed in the drill and when I need to use the drill the battery is often drained to the degree that I can't even mix paint with it.

There is obviously something wrong with the design of these batteries. Too bad, because the tools themselves are decent. I was about to buy another silver battery, assuming that I just happened to get a bad one, but after reading the comments from others with similar experience, I have decided to cut my losses and buy a better product from either Dewalt or Makita. Black and Decker should issue a recall on these batteries and replace them with ones that perform as expected. If they do this, I might consider buying B&D products again in the future.

Black & Decker seem to have made a bad decision when they chose to use Ni-CD (Nickle-Cadmium) batteries in their line of cordless tools. For years, everyone has known that NI-CD batteries suffer from battery "memory." Unless they are run down completely each time, they will "remember" how much charge they need to reach a full charge and soon will only take that partial charge.

I tried to eliminate this problem on my B&D tools (cordless drill, string trimmer/edger, and dustbuster) by building a battery discharger using a car light bulb and a couple of clip leads. This helped, but after a few months of use, they stopped holding a full charge.

I began looking for information on the batteries to see if there was something I could do, or if I could find a better replacement battery. I stumbled across a battery on eBay that was listed as a replacement for the HPB18 and I found a seller who was selling 3.0Ah Ni-Mh (Nickle Metal Hydride) batteries to fit these tools. Ni-Mh batteries do not develop a "memory" so they can be charged without being run down. They will charge up to a full charge every time (well, they will get old eventually.) They are a bit more expensive than the B&D batteries, but I ordered one to try. I was not disappointed!

Using my B&D Ni-Cd batteries to trim and edge my lawn required 4 charged battery packs. With the new Ni-Mh batteries, I could do the whole lawn with 1 pack.

The same results happened with my dustbuster. The B&D batteries had to be charged after 2-3 days of brief, intermittent use. The Ni-Mh batteries last well over 1 week!

A few words of caution if you switch to the Ni-Mh batteries: They will charge using the standard, black, slip-on battery chargers sold by B&D, but the charging time will be longer (they are storing more charge.) I would not recommend using the Dual Charger since it is a quick charger and may not be compatible with Ni-Mh batteries (being a bit expensive, I haven't wanted to sacrifice one of my Ni-Mh batteries to test!) Finally, make sure you buy the 3Ah batteries - the same seller is selling lower capacity batteries if you don't need the higher power, but you will probably regret not spending the extra money for higher power batteries eventually.
I now have 4 of the Ni-Mh batteries and they are all working great.

Black and Decker has at least 7 versions of the Slide 18v battery pack. You have no guidance which is better than the other as B&D absolutely refuses to publish the ampere rating or number of contacts of any of them.

Battery identification is poor: Every battery I have seen is marked "244760-00." What good is that in identifying the battery? There are some molded-in numbers but B&D absolutely refuses to tell you what they mean.

On the blister pack for the HPB18-OPE you read "25% more power than the standard battery*" Finding the "*", it says "Compared to the HPB18." Both are the same price on Lowes shelves. B&D absolutely refuses to divulge how these two compare to each other or the FireStorm series.

A Factory Store manager has said two Firestorm versions were once better but have been downgraded this past 12-18 months and are usually worse than the HP18 units. B&D absolutely refuses to divulge any history of the FireStorm 18V batteries.

These batteries will connect to three types of chargers. One will charge the battery in 9 hours, another in 3 hours, and the last in 1 hour. Between the battery and charger combination, severely reduced battery life will result if the battery is left on the charger longer than 2 days. On another the degrade occurs only after 30 days. The third does not damage the battery in any length of time. You are left to guess which combination is optimum and which is a disaster. B&D absolutely refuses to divulge which is which.

I have many hours into trying to make heads or tails out of this, including several contacts on the phone, and e-mails with B&D, ditto plus in person at a factory store and factory repair station. The B&D Factory Stores and Repair Stations concur with my view that B&D is extremely arrogant, totally wrong in their attitude, and show no willingness to change.

This year the batteries are both dead (won't hold a charge). I broke down last night and went to HD to buy a replacement battery. Then I read the review here that talks about the code underneath the battery clip, so I decided to check it out. My two old batteries have the code "415" (Black & Decker, 1.5 AH) while the new battery I just bought has the code "410" (Black & Decker, 1.0 AH)!!
